The Hunt

The Hunt
Chapter 17
Choices
What are choices? Technically the word choices is defined as an act or instance of choosing; selection. In life we have to make many choices. Choices like when to get up, what to wear, what to eat for dinner, when to go to bed, etc.  We make choices so often that we don’t ever realize how important each and every one of them are, how they shape and affect our life every day. Some choices however are major. They don’t just shape our everyday life, but they also alter our future. I never thought much about choices before. I made them without carefully thinking them through, but then again don’t we all do that. I soon found out thought just how important making informed choices were.

~ Joey’s P.O.V~

I woke up in a very soft bed surrounded by blinding white blankets and pillows. I sat up  an seen the morning sun light shining through the huge windows and reflecting off of the white bedding. I looked over at Michael and seen he was out cold still. I got up and grabbed some clothes and went in to the bathroom on my side of the room. After a quick shower I walked back into the room and seen Michael had rolled over but was still fast asleep. I shook my head and checked the time, 7:15am.  Walking out of the room I was careful to shut the door as quietly as possible. The hall outside seemed bigger and harder to navigate last night.  I needed to find my dad so I could ask him about my sister and I didn’t want Michael there to overhear it.

I walked aimlessly around the massive building till I ran in to a familiar face. Zayden was standing in the hall way looking out a pair of windows that stretched from the floor and ended in an arch at the ceiling. “ Hey.” I greeted him. He turned his head then looked back out the window, “ What’s up?” he asked. “ Um, looking for Mich– my  dad.” “ Try the conference room. Down the hall on the left.” He instructed me. I continued down the hall and found the doors that led to  the room we had been in yesterday when we first met the arch angel Michael. I knocked but got no answer so  I placed a hand on the knob and turned it slowly. The door wasn’t lock so I opened it slightly and heard voices.  “ Michael I don’t think the boys are ready for that kind of training.” I heard someone say. “ Gabriel, we need them in our army. Lucifer’s followers are growing more active here lately, we need to be ready for an attack at any moment.” My dad snapped. “ You need to think this through. Last time you thought the he was preparing an attack you prepared thousands and the training injured many, only to find out it was a false alarm. Please brother listen to reason.” Gabriel pleaded. “ You don’t understand. It’s my job to protect everybody and I can’t risk it not being a false alarm. Ready the recruits, training starts tomorrow.” I heard I sound that sounded like someone slammed their fist on the table. “ You are being unreasonable!” Gabriel accused. “ No Gabriel your being over protective!” “ Are your sons going to be joining this pointless ‘army’?!” Gabriel questioned. “ Everyone is joining.” Another voice joined in now, “ Guys we have a visitor.” Suddenly the door swung open and exposed me standing there eavesdropping. I swallowed nervously and said, “ I can come back later when you’re not… ah… busy.”  Michael looked at me and I wanted nothing more than for the floor the swallow me up. “ That’s fine. I’ll come find you after I’m done.” I walked away and ran back to the room. After  making a few wrong turns I finally found Michael and I’s room and burst in. Michael was up now had just walked out of the shower only half dressed. “ For Christ’s sake Michael get dressed we need to talk now.” Michael threw on a shirt and I told him about what I had overheard. “ An army?” he asked, “ Like for real an army?” I nodded, “ like for real a legit army.”  “ Against Lucifer? The devil?” I simply nodded again. Michael ran his hands nervously through his hair.  I hung my head and thought about what had happened. On day I was happily flying around with the remainder of my family and the next I felt as though a knife of betrayal had been thrust in to my chest. I looked at Michael who had ceased pacing and flopped down on the bed opposite me. By the looks of him he felt the same way I did. “ What are we going to do?” I asked him. For a long time he sat there and I began to think he hadn’t heard me, then he looked at me a shrugged hopelessly. “ We can’t stay here.” I stated sadly. I wanted nothing more than to remain here, but was I willing to join the so call army and at what cost? “Agreed.” Michael sighed. I was about to ask him what he thought we should do to leave but the doors to our room flung open and our father walked in with a grim face. He looked from me then to Michael and back to me, then spoke, “ undoubtedly Joey has told you what he overheard.” Michael stood up and angrily snapped at the other Michael, “ Ya. He did. How dare you! Bring us up here just to be part of some stupid army!” Our father looked indignant and curtly told his son, “ that was not the only reason I brought you up here but is certainly your duty as my son to protect those who need it as I have been doing for many years.”

“ When were you going to tell us?” Michael asked. I looked them. Father and son angrily glaring at each other, one stood slightly taller than the other but they looked so identical. “ Soon.”  He looked sad and I could see he was fighting between being a leader and being a father. “ And you,” He addressed me, “ I didn’t want either of you to find out this way but it seems it’s too late. Though in the future I’d hoped you’d show more restrain of sharing details without knowing the full story. However I suppose now that the cats out of the bag we should discuss this.” He walked over to the window and began to tell us about his army, “ Many years ago at the beginning of time Angels lived in peace with each other. Then He – my father – made the humans. Many of us were okay with them but one of us loathed them. He was jealous of my father’s love and adoration of them. One day he started secretly building an army and over time he ranks grew large. Lucifer prepared a brilliant attack. Terrible, but brilliant. The eve of the beginning of his war my father warned him to call it off. He refused and we cast out… by me. I pleaded with him to stop but he refused and I had my orders that I had to follow. I forced him out and he out up a good fight, but in the end I was stronger. Anyway he’s gaining power again and I believe he planning an attack again. That’s why we need an army.”  He turned back to us with immensely sad eyes. “ And if we refuse to join.” Michael asked, but he was longer angry. “ Then there is only one other option.”  “ Which is?” He looked at Michael like he didn’t want to tell him but said, “Remotio alarum.”  Michael and I exchanged questioning looks. “ I translates to: wing removal. It’s when your angel half is, well not removed but push back in to the deepest pits of your self and you are unable to access it. Almost like it’s gone.” I’d only known about my angel blood for a day, yet thinking of the possibility of losing it all together made me panic. I could tell Michael felt the same way. “ Okay fine say we do chose to stay. Can we visit out finds and tell them what happened so they don’t worry.” “ I suppose that could be arranged.” Michael and I exchanged looks again. He gave me a tiny nod which I returned and then he turned to the other Michael and said “ Fine.Okay.”

~Johns P.O.V~

“Nothing in this one.” Sam said as she tossed another book aside. “Keep looking,” I mumbled. “ Are you sure its angels?” Claire asked as she absentmindedly flipped through the pages of a book older than I was. “All the signs point to angels.”  I told her. As soon as a seen there was little signs of struggle I knew that it had to be  a very powerful thing, but the key point was how it got in and out of the room without breaking a window or opening a door. Ever since Claire and I got back we’ve been shifting through a library full of books about angel to learn how to summon them.  I picked up the next book Angels: A guide angels and their history.

An angel (from the Greek ἄγγελος - aggelos) is a supernatural being or spirit, usually humanoid in form, found in various religions and mythologies.

The theological study of angels is known as "angelology". In Zoroastrianism and Abrahamic religions they are often depicted as benevolent celestial beings who act as intermediaries between Heaven and Earth, or as guardian spirits or a guiding influence.

The term "angel" has also been expanded to various notions of spirits found in many other religious traditions. Other roles of angels include protecting and guiding human beings, and carrying out God's tasks….

Okay now how do you summon them? I thought. “John I think I found something!” Sam exclaimed and handed me a book.

How I call an Angel

Use at your own risk

What you need:

An offering (Gold, blood, etc.)

Holy oil

Holy water

Fire.

What you do:

Draw a circle on the floor about five feet in diameter with the holy oil. Inside the circle place the offering.

Sprinkle the offering with the holy water. Say the incantation listed below and then as you say the last word drop your fire (usually a match) And then quickly exit the circle and light the oil on fire.

Incantation:             alatum ens et servus ad deus i praecipio vos accipere hanc oblationem, et apparent me  intus tuus circulus

Note: This will trap the angel that is in the closest proximity if they are on earth.

“Okay… seems easy enough.” I said. “Easy? John what exactly is your definition of easy?”  Claire asked. “We have everything we need.” I said as I lifted a solid gold cross and chain from under my shirt. “Where did you get that?”

“Nicked it off a vampire once.”

“A vampire? What was a vampire doing wearing a cross?”
“Beats me. No you get the holy oil and the holy water. Sam and I will clean up a spot for the circle.”

Clair got up and headed out to the garage. “Alright, lets move the table against the wall and the sofa over there.” I instructed. “ Okay.” We began pushing the table and I asked,” Are you okay Sam?” She didn’t reply until the heavy table was pushed against the wall between the door and window. “ I guess. I’m just worried what they wanted with Michael.”

“I don’t know Sam.”
“ What if this doesn’t work.” I shrugged  “ We keep looking I guess.”  We started pushing the couch against the wall and Claire walked in with two jars. I took the holy oil and began creating circle in the center on the cleared space. I took off the necklace and placed it in the center  of the circle. Taking the holy water I dipped my hand in it and flicked the water on the chain. “ Okay hand me the matches.” I stood over the chain, matches at the ready.  Claire stood in front of me outside the circle so I could see the words.  I began, “alatum ens et servus ad deus i praecipio vos accipere hanc oblationem, et apparent me intus tuus circulus” At the word I lit the match and dropped it. As it hit the chain the chain erupted in blue flames and I jumped out of the circle and waited. Nothing happened. We stood there and Claire said, “ Maybe we did something wrong?” Though we both knew I hadn’t.  Just then we heard a ringing noise like you hear when your ears… well ring. “What is that?” Clair asked. I shrugged. I got louder and louder. After a minute or two it was so loud we had to cover our ears. The lights started to flicker and the room shook a little bit. Light came in through the window  like the sun was on top of the house. Even though it was dusk out. Now I has hunched over and Sam was on the floor with her head between her knes trying to block out the sound. Claire’s face was twisted like she was in pain. I understood because the sound …. Hurt. The suddenly with a loud  Bang! The power went out, the sound stopped the house shook violently knocking me to the ground.

I stood back up and looked around, in the kitchen stood three figures. All males by the look of it.  I stood up quietly. Their backs were facing us and the shortest one was closest to me. I quietly snuck up on him and lunged. I heard him gasp and choke as I locked my arms around his neck and chest. I see the largest one raise his arm and make a fist. As he did this I felt an invisible hand grab me and I was flung against the counter and held there.  Then the lights came on.

~Joey’s P.O.V~

I was back in the kitchen. I was dark, the power was out. Suddenly a weight crashed down on me. I felt a arm go around my chest and another go around my neck cutting off my air. I couldn’t breathe of a second before a Michael raised his arm and my attacker was thrown off of me. I stumbled forward and then turned around to see John pinned invisibly to the counter. I looked at him and he looked at me. “ John! You attacked me!” I yelled. “ You know him?” Michael asked. “ Yes.” The other Michael and I answered. He lowered his arm and John jumped forward. Sam and Claire rushes forward and grabbed Michael and I into a tight hug and I heard someone sob. : Calm down we were only gone for a day or two.” Michael said. Claire pulled back and said, “you’ve been gone for a week and you disappeared!  We were worried sick! We thought you were…..” “We’re fine.” I reassured her.  “ So what the hell happened?” John asked. “ Um well,” Michael started, “ This is our…. Erm…. Father.” He gestured to Michael. “ Our?” John said. “ Joey and mine.” Sam’s and Claire’s mouths dropped. “ Your brothers?” John asked. We nodded. “ This is nice and all but what did we come there for?” our dad asked. “So who or what are you?” John asked. “ I  am an angel. An archangel to be exact. My name is Michael.” Johns eyes widened and he said, “ you dad’s the archangel Michael?!” “ Yes.” “Oh my…..gosh.” Sam said with a nervous look at Michael. The I realized something. “ Claire, you said we we’re gone for a week. What do you mean?” Michael interjected and said, “ Son time in heaven moves slower than time on earth.”  We all stood there, nobody knew what to say or do. Finally Michael said, “ So…. We just wanted to let you guys know we were okay.”  More awkward silence followed his words. Nobody knew what to say or do now. Finally Sam asked the question we all wanted to know, “ what now?” We all looked at each other. I looked at Michael who looked ad John who looked at Dad. “ We go back now.” Dad said. “ What?! No!” John said. “Look we came here so you could check in. We’ve done that. Now we have  much to do so lets go.” He said more forcefully.  John stood there glaring at Michael. “ Look,” I said, “ We already agreed to go back, okay?” John looked at me, “ you what?” “ We agreed to go back.” Johns eyes got red and he looked away, “ go then.” “What?”  He looked up and I could see tears forming in his eyes “ Well go on get out of here! Go back to heaven! Or where ever you came from!” “ John, come one don’t be like that.” Michael said.  “ Johns right.” Claire said quietly, “ the longer you stay the harder it will be.”  Sam who was looking at the floor looked up and said, “ No. Don’t go!” “ We have to.” She started crying and looked back at her shoes. “Come one boys.” Dad said. “It’s time to go.” I looked around John was staring angrily at Michael, Claire wouldn’t look at us at all and I suspected she was crying, and Sam was inspecting her shoes and sobbed occasionally. “ Alright,” Michael said, “ Bye I guess. Sam be good.”No body responded. Our dad put one hand on each of our shoulders and  the next second we were  gone.

~John’s P.O.V~

They were gone. And I didn’t care anymore. Sam and Claire both walked away and went to bed. I stood in the kitchen  and I could hear Sam crying from down the hall. A heavy weight had settled into my stomach and I wiped a random tear off my cheek. We didn’t need them anymore, but even as I said it I still missed them. I took a deep breath and sighed. What’s done is done, I reminded myself. I turned off the kitchen light and went in to my room. I looked around the shabby room. It wasn’t that bad I guess. I had a wooden dresser and a king sized bed by the window. I sat on the edge of the bed and looked at the dark sky and wondered what they were doing now. “Well,” I said to myself, “ At least they’re safe.”

Chapter 16

Blood Brothers

~John’s P.O.V~

They were late as usual. Claire and I were sitting in our room flipping through tv. Michael and Joey were supposed to meet us down her at noon and it was way past that.  “Maybe we should go check on them?” Claire suggested. I checked my watch, (1:37pm). I huffed, “I suppose we can.” Though secretly I was worried. They were never this late. We walked up to their room and knocked on the door. No answer so I tried the door handle. Locked. I stood there and the maid walked up the hallway. I approached her and said, “ Ma’m? My brothers and I had a fight yesterday and I can’t get into the room cause they locked me out.” She smiled and laughed alittle, “ I’ll unlock it for you sweetheart.” She walked over and slid the master key into the lock. The door clicked open and she patted me on the shoulder as she left. I walked in and heard Claire gasp behind me. They were gone. Their clothes were here and the T.V. was still on. The coffee pot was in to floor and the beds were unmade, but there was no sign of Michael or Joey. We searched around the room for clues but found none. Giving up I sat on the bed and Claire sat beside me, “ Where do you think they went?” I shrugged. “ Do you think something kidnapped them?” She asked. I stood up and checked the windows and door for forced entry but found none. “ If that’s the case then what ever it was had to have appeared out of no where into the room take out both Michael and Joey and leave again – with both oh them – and not leave a single trace.” I said. “ Is there anything that could do that?” She asked. I wracked my brain and paced the floor. Then I thought of the only thing I knew of that had the power to do that. “ Claire we gotta make a trip home come on.” I said grabbing their stuff and headed out the door.

~Joey’s P.O.V~

I groaned.   I had just woken up and this hotel bed was so uncomfortable. My neck was stiff and my back hurt. I had fallen asleep with my hands behind me and the ached. Plus sleeping in the sitting position wasn’t helping… wait what? I opened my eyes and my head shot up. I was sitting in a chair with my hands behind me and I couldn’t move. I was in an all-white  empty room. I opened my mouth and yelled, “ hello!”  “Ouch that was my ear! You don’t have to yell it’s not going to do any good.” “Michael?” I said softer. “ No you idiot. Its Santa Clause… of course its me!” he hissed. We were sitting back to back against each other. My panic was calming down a bit, but I was still jittery. “ Where are we? What happened? Why can’t we move?” I asked him. “ I don’t know, I don’t know, oh and, I don’t know. All I know is there’s no rope binding us so it must be some kind of magic.” He said. “ So what do we do?”  He didn’t answer.  “ Who was that dude in the Hotel room,”I aksed him.  “ I don’t know. He appeared out of thin air and I jumped up knocking over the coffee pot. Next thing I know he’s beside me and when he touched me I blacked out.” “ Same. Sorta… I heard you knock over the coffee pot and got up to turn on the lights. When I got them on he’d put you over his shoulder and came after me.” “Okay so let’s see Demon maybe?”he hypothesized. I thought about this, “ could a demon knock us out by touch?” I asked. “ Hmm…  not that I know of.” He said. We both sat there and thought about what that could have been. “ I got nothing,” I said. “ Me either.”

We sat there for a while before two double doors appeared out of nowhere in the wall and a man walked in. He was wearing a white mid –sleeve shirt and black pants. He had light brown short curly hair, and dark grey eyes. He walked fully into the room and my heart stopped. Behind him protruding from his back were two large light beige-ish color wings. “ Of course.” Michael said, “ Angels.”  The man raised his hand and snapped his fingers. The pressure that had bound my wrist had suddenly disappeared and I could move.  I jumped up and Michael did the same. We uncertain looks and then turned to the man. “ Who are you?” he asked. “ My name is Zayden. I’m the son of the arch angel Gabriel and the  goddess Phobe. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” He walked closer and looked at us like one might examine an animal in a cage. Which is what I felt like knowing we were trapped here in this room with him.  As he got closer he looked to be about my age or maybe a year older. “Alright you two follow me.” He command and began to walk out the door. Michael and I followed slowly and kept looking for ways to escape, but found none.

Zayden led us to a set of large mahogany doors that towered over us by about ten feet with huge wooded door handles. He reached forward and opened the doors. They swung open lightly and I could see the people inside. There were several people sitting at a table staring at us.  “ Welcome to the Angels Den.” Zayden said and beckoned us in. He started at the end of the table and said, “ This is Trya. ( an African skinned woman with light brown eyes and straight black hair. She had s young face, but her eyes revealed her true and old age.) And this is Sable ( an Asian girl who look to be about 20 and also had black/brown hair, but had unusually purple eyes.) And Riley ( A red head with yellow orange eyes and pale ivory skin.).” Zayden then walked over to the other side of the table and said, “ This is Maliki( A man with gray hair but a young face and navy blue eyes) Raphael ( A man with blonde hair and hazel eyes.) And my father Gabriel ( The man from the hotel but here he had golden eyes) and this is the arch angel Michael.” He said gesturing to the man in the middle of the table. He had Chocolate brown hair and ice blue eyes. His red v-neck shirt hugged his body and his hands were balled up on to table infront of him. He was looking at us and I started to feel incredibly nervous so I crossed my arms over my chest.

“Okay everybody.” Michael said and the others stood and left. Michael and I were left standing in front of the doors looking at this man who had stood up out of his chair and easily stood 6’7”.  “ Who are you?”  Michael asked. “ My names Michael. In an arch angel and command the other angels in Heaven. I’m also your father.”  Michaels mouth dropped. I stood there thinking so Michael has an angel for a father. “ So why am I here?” I asked, surely they’d want to talk alone. “ Because I’m your father also Josef.” Now my mouth dropped. My father? No. “ My father’s dead.” I said angrily. He sighed, “ No Josef. I’m you father. I met your mother years ago on a beach about week before she married your father.” He paused, “ I told her the truth about who I was, what I was, and she still liked me. I spent the entire week there. She  had had a fight with you father she told me that she didn’t know if she was still getting married. And well the rest is history.”  I still didn’t fully believe him, but he seems so honest about it I was sure. “ Josef, Michael, why do you think neither of you bare any resemblance to the man you thought was your father. And why do you think you two look so similar?” I looked at Michael and he looked at me. We both realized it at the same time; how we had the same facial structure and the same body build. I look back at him, “ Wait where did my hair color come from?” Random question I know, but I was the only one with jet black hair. “ I once had black hair when I was younger. That was he only trait you caught from me that was plainly visible.”  I didn’t know what to think, but I knew he was telling the truth. I looked at Michael – my brother – to see what he was thinking. I saw it on his face, he believed it too. “ What about Sam and Kayla?” he asked. “ No they are not mine. They are you moms’ husbands’ kids.”  He turned his head to the side, then rubbed his eyes and sighed, “ I’ll be back,” he informed us and walked out looking annoyed.  He left Michael and I standing there stunned and unsure what to do. “ This is awkward.” I said.  “ You think?”  Michael snapped. I sat down in a red cushion lined bench the stood out from the wall by the door where we were standing.  Michael sat down beside me and said, “So we’re brothers?” “ I guess” He put his head in his hands and said, “ Dude that makes me feel twice as worse about that fight.”   I sat there silently, because I had no idea what to say. I was still in shock. That’s when my father and another man walked in.  “ Boys this is Ezekiel. He’s the Wings expert. Help you with your wings.”  “ Wings? What wings?” Michael asked. “ Hm… No wings yet?” Ezekiel said, “ Well this isn’t going to be fun. Come here boys.” We hesitantly walked towards him and stopped a few feet away. “Okay so we have to ‘ sprout’ your wings. You should have gotten them around fourteen but I guess since you weren’t in touch with your father it hasn’t happened yet.” He continued, “ This is probably going to be slightly painful but you’ll live.” “ How painful?” I asked. “ You have to grow two new body parts. How painful do you think?” I winced at the thought. “ Okay  oldest first I guess. Come here Michael.” But Michael didn’t move. In fact he appeared to be frozen to the spot. “ Oh for heavens sake.” Ezekiel said and walk over to him. “ It’s ok son.” Michael the arch angel said.  Ezekiel placed his hands on Michaels shoulders and they started to glow gold. Michael yelled and jumped away from him. When he grasped the edge of the table to hold himself up I could see his shoulder blades moving beneath his shirt. I gasped and started to back away as Ezekiel approached me. “ Now Josef it going to be okay.” He said but I knew better. I look around wildly for escape. Michael had fallen on to the floor and was writhing in pain on the floor. Ezikiel had grown tired of trying to approach me and snapped his fingers. Suddenly my body seized up and I couldn’t move. “ That’s better,” he said. He walked over and place his hands on my shoulders and positioned his thumbs over my shoulder blades and rubbed them in three small circles in different directions. At first nothing happened, but then I felt my back start to get warm and them burn almost like my shirt had been set on fire. My bones felt like they were breaking and popping. I could feel them slide and move under my skin. By now Michael had passed out and I was about to follow however I stayed awake long enough to hear Ezekiel and Michael talk about how long this would take. I black out after hearing it would be several hours…

~Michael’s P.O.V~

I saw my son’s on the floor and I felt guilt and regret for being the reason they were in pain.  I was going to tell them sooner but I didn’t know how. Plus they were happier where they were. But they needed me now. I walked out and found Gabriel standing outside and he said, “ How’s it going?” “ As expected.” I said. Zayden was standing behind his father  and I looked at him, “ Zayden I need you to help them figure things out.”  He nodded and walked into the room. “What’s wrong Michael?” Gabriel asked me.  “ Do you think I should have waited to tell them?”  “ I think you waited too long brother.” Gabriel had told Zayden on his thirteenth birthday. Zayden’s ‘parents’ had divorced and his mom was an alcoholic so Gabriel went down and brought him back up here and he’s  been up with us ever since. “ I don’t know. I almost didn’t want to tell them but I needed to.”  Gabriel patted me on the shoulder. “ It was the right thing to do Michael. They needed their father. They would have figured out they were different eventually.” I nodded and walked away.

I went in to the throne room of my Father and kneeled down. Father? I thought.  Yes my son?  The reply came. Did I do the right thing?

 That depends.

 On what?

Are they happier? Are you?

Yes. I’m happier with them here and I don’t know how they feel.

My son, you are a father of two children. I am a father of many. I think I can sympathize with your fear for  them, but if you are happier then chances are they will be too.

Thank you, father.

I stood up and walked out. I went back to check on my children and seen that they were sitting up on the floor breathing heavy but they had their wings.

~Joey’s P.O.V~

“Extraordinary!” I heard someone say, “ I’ve never seen wings grow that fast! It was what twenty minutes? Insane.”

“Oooh,” groaned. My head was pounding and my shoulders were sore. Growing wings was a painful job. I pushed myself up on to my elbows and sat up. My vision was blurry and I felt sick. I looked around and seen Michael sitting up a few feet away from me. His shirt was torn and barley hanging on his torso, because of the large, white feathered wings that had grown out of his back. The lights in the room made them seem to glow and looking at them hurt my already throbbing head. I looked away and seen Zayden sitting on one of the chairs looking at us. Ezekiel was still going on about it happening so quickly. Zayden looked at him and rolled his eyes  then stood up. He walked over  to Michael and helped him up. Then me helped me up. I stood up and room spun. I blinked a few times and tried to regain my balance.  Zayden handed me a shirt and I looked down. My shirt was in the same condition as Michaels and was about to fall off. The shirt Zayden handed me was equipped for a person with wings. “ Try spreading your wings. They won’t be as cramped. There’s a mirror over there if you want to see them. One of a kind I’d say.” I  walked over and looked in the mirror. I couldn’t see them well since they were folded against my back so I tried to move them. Nothing happened. I concentrated on trying to control them and I felt them move. I took a deep breath and moved my sore new wings apart. They had about a nine foot wing span and were jet black, like my hair, but the last row or two of feathers were a dark almost bronzy brown. I turned around and realized that. The Michael had walked back in. “They suit you.” He said. I didn’t look away from the mirror, but I saw him walk up behind me. “How do they feel?” I didn’t know how to describe it. They felt odd, but also in a way they felt good. Like I’d always had them but never knew about them. “ They feel… perfect.” I responded. “Good.” He turned and walked over to talk to Michael. I continued to look at my wings and move them to get the feel of them.  “ Ready for a test run?” Michael asked. I turned and he was standing by the door with Michael. Yikes that would take some getting used to.

I walked over and we followed our father out of the room. “ So what should we call you?” Michael asked. “ Um, well I am you father, so I guess you could call me father. Or dad. Whichever you prefer. Or I suppose if that was too uncomfortable you could call me Michael. But that might get confusing.”

“ Okay, dad.” Michael said. We exited the building and walked outside. The place we had been in was the size of a castle. It had several towers and the highest one went above the cloud line so the top couldn’t be seen. “ Well, lets get started.” Our dad turned towards us. “ When I was just learning how to fly millenniums ago I learned that it was best to go at it at a run then once you’ve built up speed try to push off and catch air to fly.”  He stepped out of the way and instructed one of us to start first. Michael looked at me and then took up a running stance. He sprinted forward and ran several feet be for jumping in to the air. He spread his wings and hovered for a minute before falling forward on his face. “ That was good son. Next time try pushing with your wings more. Joey. Your turn.” I swallowed nervously and then with out hesitation I zoomed forward. I ran for a few moments and then jumped up. Unfortunately I had the same pitiful results as Michael. I had gone up for a moment then fell back onto my feet and stumbled some before falling on my hands and knees.   I stood up and walked back over to the Micheals. “ Okay. Watch I’m going to fly to the top of that tower there. Meet me up there okay?” “ Okay.” We both said. Michael took of in to a run and then leapt into the air. He spread his wings out the moment his feet left the ground and then thrust them a few times to gain altitude. Michael and I ran forward at the same time and copied his steps. We jumped up and spread out our wings. Instantly I felt a jerk and push upward with my wings. I stayed up in the air and looked at Michael who had also managed to stay up. He nodded at me and we thrusted our wings to meet our dad on top of the tower. We few higher and higher until we hovered slightly about the tower then brought our wings in and lightly touched down on the roof. “ Very good. I knew you had it in you.” He said proudly. “ That was amazing.” Michael said. “ I know.” Dad replied. We spent the rest of the day flying around  the sky and hanging out with each other.

After a while we got tired so we decided to turn in. Zayden lead up to a room that was huge. It was easily half the size of John’s entire house and had two four poster beds with white bed linens. In the back of the rom there was a giant flat screen tv and by the windows there were two wardrobes against the walls. I walked over and opened one and seen all the clothes were my size. I looked at Michael and he looked at me. We both randomly started laughing so much I doubled over out of breath from laughing. We finally stopped laughing and looked back at each other. “ Can you believe it?” Michael asked. “ I don’t know, dude. This is a whole new level of unbelievable.” I said. “ Ya, but still it seems pretty real. Do you think we’re hallucinating or something?” He asked. “ No… I think this is real but, wow who’d’ve thought.”  I said. “ I know. Us brothers. No offence but I’d have never thought that.” He told me.   “ Me either.” I confessed. “Wow. I guess we’d better go to bed cause I’m exhausted.” He said. “ Wait! What about John and Claire? We just left them there. They’re probably worried.” “ I forgot about them.” Michael said. “ Me too.” I said guiltily. “ I guess we’ll talk to Micha– Dad in the morning about going back.” I agreed and changed in to night clothes. I laid down and processed todays thoughts; A new dad, an new brother, and wings. It was almost too much to process in one night. I didn’t know how I felt about Michael being my brother. Did that make Sam my half sister? I wasn’t sure. I laid there and thought about Kayla. How was she? Could my dad fix her? I decided to ask him in the morning.  I heard Michael’s breathing slow and I knew he was sleep. I closed my eyes and drfted in to a dream where I was flying and soaring through the clouds with my dad and Michael. Maybe I hadn’t lost my family after all.

The Hunt

                                        The Hunt

                                                              Chapter 15

                                                              Sold Souls

I woke up as the phone beside the bed rang. “Hello?” I asked groggily. “ Wake up call.” The woman said. “ M’okay. Thanks.” I mumbled and threw the covers off. Michael was still fast asleep and John was laying still with his eyes closed, but I knew he was awake by the way his eyebrows moved occasionally. “ Michael wake up!” I yelled and when he ignored me I shook him a few times. “ Go away!” he yelled.  I walked in to the bathroom and got a towel. I ran it under the cold water and brought it back it, “One last chance Michael.” He gave me the finger and I tossed the soaked towel at Michael. He Jumped up and gasped, “ What the Hell, Joey!” I dodged Michael as he walked toward the bathroom trying to shove me as he walked by. “ Do you two have to start so early in the morning,” John complained as he rolled of the bed. As he stood up he stretched and then grabbed his jacket and said, “I’ll be back.” While Michael was in the shower and John was gone I quickly changed in to a navy t-shirt and black jeans. I combed my messy hair with my fingers and looked in the mirror. Over-all I was satisfied with what I saw, however I could see the faint outline of the bandages John had forced me to put on last night after the fight with Michael had reopened old wounds.  Finally Michael came out dressed in blue jeans and a red long sleeve shirt. We grabbed our bags and walked outside to find John. He was leaning against the car and when he seen us coming he straightened up and got in the car.

Once we were in the car John started talking, “ Okay, so most likely you’re going to get suspended for that fight. If you get lucky and they don’t then DON’T. I repeat DO NOT. GET INTO ANOTHER FIGHT. Got it?” “ Got it.” Michael and I said in unison.  I wasn’t to happy too be going back to school after yesterday but ii knew I couldn’t avoid it.  As we got to the school Michael and I got out and walked in. I walked in to the cafeteria and found Natalie, Nichole, and Cierra.  “ Hey,” I greeted them. Nichole looked up at me and said, “ Hey your alive!” “ Ya. Why wouldn’t I be?” I asked puzzled. “Well,” She explained, “ rumor has it you got the shit beat out of you yesterday by your brother and he nearly killed you.” I sighed, rumors spread fast around her, I thought. I was about to respond when I heard the principal on the intercom say, “ would Nick and Sam Dawson please report to my office immediately!” I picked up my book bag and cast a sorrowful glance at my friends before walking to catch up with Michael.

When we walked in to the office the principal, Mr. Perry, was standing there waiting for us. As we walked into his office and sat down. “ Boys this fight went way to far. So you wanna tell me what this is all about?” Michael looked down and said, “ I’m sorry sir I just kinda lost my head. To much… recent stress.” The principal folded his hands on the desk and said, “ I’m sorry about your parents but Nick that’s no reason I try to kill your brother.” Michael nodded and I sat there quietly.  The principal sat there for a moment and then said, “ Well I’m going to go easy on you guys, two weeks after school detention. I’ve already contacted your brother so he know you’ll be getting out later than usual.”  After that he dismissed us and we went to class. By the time I finally got to gym I had explained what had happened a dozen or so times. I stood in line for roll and seen a crowd had formed around an unusually quiet Michael. “ Come on Nick! Tell us!” I heard people begging him. I found Nichole and Natalie had already started walking. I hurried over to them and they both looked at me. “ You didn’t get suspended?” Natalie asked me shocked. “ Um, no just detention for two weeks,” I explained. “ Well then. I guess that’s lucky, huh?”  I shrugged and said, “ I guess.”   The rest of the class, who had participated in gym, finished their warm ups and the  gym teachers said we were going outside to walk the track and play soccer. We walked out of the side door and traveled over to the track behind the school. We walked around the big red oval track for the rest of the period. We mostly talked about random things like school, favorite music, and television. I was listening to Nichole talk when I asked, “ you’re a fan of supernatural, right?” She looked at me, “ Ya, why?” “ How do you kill a Shtriga?” “ According to supernatural you’d have to shot it with an iron buck shot while it’s feeding on a person.” She looked at me through narrow suspicious eyes, “ Why? You know they are not real right?” I waved it off and said, “ I know just curious.”  She looked at me, but didn’t respond. The air around us became awkward and tense. Suddenly I noticed that the rest of the class had left and it was just the three of us and the two people behind us… wait those two aren’t in our gym class! I whipped around and smelt the strong smell of sulfur.  They were a about fifteen feet away and looking at me. “ Guys,” I whispered to Nichole and Natalie,” When I say so run to the school find Nick.” “ Why Sam wha- whats wrong with their eyes?!” Natalie exclaimed. “ Demons. They’re real?” Nichole whispered. I glanced at her through the corner of my eye. “ Ya they’re real.”  The demons advanced quicker to catch up since we were still walking, well rather backing, away from them. “ Okay,” I said, “ Now!” To my surprise Natalie ran but Nichole stayed put. “ What are you doing!” I yelled. “ You’re gonna need help.” She stated.  “ how are you going to help me, your just gonna get in my way,” I snapped.  “ Try me.” She retorted. I shook my head and stopped walking as did Nichole.   The demons were right infront of us now, barley five feet away. “ Well? What can you do?”  Nichole stiffened and said, “Exorcizamus te, omnis immundus spiritus, omnis satanica potestas, omnis incursio infernalis adversarii, omnis legio, et secta diabolica.” I was shocked but I remembered to continue, “Ergo draco maledicte et section. Ergo draco maledicte et legio secta diabolica” I heard a male voice behind me say, “Ut Ecclésiam tuam secúra tibi fácias servire libertáte, te rogámus, audi nos!” The demons’ eye’s got wide and they all opened their mouths but to our surprised no black smoke came out.  That’s also when I realized they weren’t attacking us. “ Why are you here?” Nichole asked. “ What do you think we are a ghost?” the blonde demon sneered, but continued,  “ think about it what better place to make deals than a high school full of young, impulsive, naïve, and hormonal teenagers?”  “So that’s it?” Michael asked, “ Deals?”  “ Yes,” she said very slowly as if teaching him a new word. “ Why?” “  Because dear boy, not as many people are making deals anymore sadly. But then the master had the idea of targeting a, uh, younger audience.” Nichole spoke up now, “ What do you tell them? Surely people here don’t wanna make a  deal with a demon this young. If what I know is true then they get what ten years? That mean at maximum they get around thirty years.”  “ Twenty nine actually.” The other demon said with a British accent, “ if you were right about the ten year part. However it actually twenty five.” Michael gave Nichole a look that said be quiet, then turned to the demon, “ Don’t you think people would notice a string of deaths like that. People from the same school all dying around the same age.”

“Doesn’t matter to us. Either way people will still make deals or others ignore the fact that we exist.”

“ Well if you’ll excuse us we have to get going, deals don’t make themselves you know.”
“You not going anywhere,” Michael said though he didn’t sound too sure. “ Oh and who’s going to stop us? You, Michael? With what Joey and some high school sophomore?” She sneered. “ Michael? Joey?” Nichole asked. Realization shown on the demons face and she said, “sweetheart did you really think their names were Sam and Nick? No this is Michael and this ,”She paused and looked at me, “is Joey.”  Nichole looked at us like she wasn’t sure who to believe.  I stood their silently.

Suddenly the demons face changed and she was no longer looking at us but past us. A man had appeared behind us. He was tall with brown hair, ivory skin, and yellow eyes. His lips were pulled into a tight frown and his eyes showed his anger. He walked towards us and stopped a few feet behind us. He looked the demon in the middle in the eye and said, “abstulit daemon retro ad infernum, in quo est super vos non faciunt me et indicabo tibi iterum.” The demon looked like she would argue, but seemed to have lost her confidence. The demon said something in  a low whisper and then they all disappeared including the mysterious man. Michael and I exchanged glances, but neither of us knew what just happened. “ Another demon you think?” he suggested. “ No,” I replied, “It had yellow eyes. Demons have black or red eyes.”  Michael looked back at the spot and said, “ Also a demon usually leaves traces of sulfur but,” he walked back to where the man had stood, “ There isn’t anything here.” I heard someone harshly cough behind me and I remembered Nichole was still here. I looked at her and they only thing I could think to say was, “ How did you know that exorcism?” “ I watch a lot of Supernatural and just happened to remember it.” She said annoyed.  “Oh.”  “Oh?! Is that all you have to say is oh?” She yelled. “ What do you want me to say?” I asked calmly. “How about who the hell you are Sam or should I say Joey?!” Michael walked back over and said, “ calm down don’t make a scene.”  “ Calm down! You want me to calm down?” Micheal ignored her and turned to me, “ I texted John, he’s on his way.” “Alright lets go and wait for him upfront.”  I started walking with Michael when he turned around and said, “ Are you coming or not?” Nichole gave him an ill-tempered glare, but followed.

We walked to the front of the school and I checked the clock. “ We only have ten minutes until school gets out.” I informed them. John pulled up a few minutes later. Michael and I walked up to the car and said, “ okay get in.” While looking at Nichole.  “ Um, excuse me?” She she stuttered. “ Get in” Michael repeated. “ Hell no! I don’t know you or you.” She said while looking at Michael and them me. “ Okay look,” Michael started and took his hands off the car door – which he had opened a moment ago –  and pulling them on his sided, “ I’m not in the mood for this. I’ve had a really long stressful week and I don’t wanna add kidnapping to my list of problems so GET IN THE DAMN CAR!” Nichole scowled but walked to the car and opened the door. She hesitated but when Michael started to walk around the car she hurriedly got in and slammed the door shut. I got in the back beside her and she pressed herself against the door away from me.

The ride back was awful. Nobody said a thing and tensions ran high in the car. Michael stared out the window and John constantly muttered to himself and occasionally glanced back at Nichole who looked at all of us with a mix of suspicion hatred and fear. Finally we got back to the hotel and walked back to the room. Nichole was the first to speak, “ Okay so who the hell are you people?” She demanded.  John ignored her and asked, “ What happened?” I started by saying, “ We were walking the track in gym and I noticed the two people following behind  us I’d never seen in there before so I slowed down and as they got closer I could tell they were demons,  so I walked faster  and told Nichole and Natalie to run back to the school and get him, but when I told them to go Nichole stayed.” Michael took it up from there, “ I was in the gym sitting on the bleachers when some chick ran in and looked around then she ran towards me and said, ‘ Sam needs you!’ I asked for what and she said she didn’t know that there were a few girls following them and Sam was pretty freaked out. So I decided to go back out and that’s when I seen these two trying to preforming an exorcism but it failed.” “It failed? How?” John asked. Michael shrugged, “ beats me, I heard ‘em say it and it was perfectly said.” “ Hello! I want some answers!” Nichole yelled. She looked at me and I looked at John and then said, “ Okay where to start where to start, um, ok  so we’re hunters and those were demons, um,  I’m Joey this Michael and John.” I quickly informed her. “ Hunters aren’t real. Demons aren’t real.” She said slowly. “ They are both very real.” John said.  She turned to him and said, “ your all crazy.” Michael took a step towards her and she jumped back. He ignored it and said, “ You explain it then. Who were those people? Why did they disappear? You seem to know enough about the supernatural world so explain in the rational world.” Nichole opened her mouth to respond but nothing came out except, “ I can’t” Michael leaned forward and cupped a hand behind his ear, “ I’m sorry, what was that? You can’t? Can’t what?” “ I can’t explain it!” she snapped. “ Thought so.” He said. Nichole rolled her eyes and crossed her arms with a huff. “ Michael! Stop that this is serious.” John said.  Michael glared at him, but said nothing. John started pacing the room. “ Okay so we know they’re making deals. So first we  gotta find who all has been making deals.” He said. “How?” Michael asked. John looked at him, “ I don’t know.”  “ Great. We have demons making deals and we have no way to find out who’s already made deals.” Michael complained. “ It wouldn’t matter. There’s no way to break a demon deal.” Nichole said. Now John looked at her, but she didn’t flinch.  John looked grim and nodded to show she was right, “ they’re all gonna die, but at least we could warn them or something.”  “ What’s the point?” He shrugged. John walked over and sat on the bed and looked out the window. “Now what?” I asked. “ Nothing, I guess. There isn’t much we can do, except get rid of those demons.” Michael told him, “ Theres no point in going back the mystery man took care of them. I don’t think they’ll be back.” John looked intrigued and asked, “ what mystery  man.”  “ The man that got rid of the demons. He said something to them and they disappeared.”  “ Hmm.  So I guess we pack up. Oh and Claire’s awake.”  Michaels gasped, “ What? We have to go see her.”  “ Later.” John said. “ First wehad other business to take care of.” He looks at Nichole. Nichole met his eyes with a look of determination and fear. “Don’t worry we won’t hurt you.” He assured her. “ I just need you to promise me you won’t tell anybody what happened. Not for our safety but for yours. Bad thing seem to attract to people who have associations with hunting.” “ Don’t worry. I’m going to pretend I don’t know any of you.” She said and looked pointedly at me. My heart sunk a little with guilt.

We took Nichole home and drove to the hospital. The sunny day had turned in to a rainy evening as storm clouds crowded in to the sky. We walked in the quiet hospital that smelled of sick people and antiseptic. Everything was white; the walls, floors, ceilings, even the chairs in the waiting room where white. We approached the front desk and an old woman with blonde curl hair that was in a messy ponytail and thick cat eyed glass wearing yep you guessed it white scrubs. “ Can I help you?” She asked. “ Um ya were here to see Claire Johnson.”  John said remembering the name Michael and Cassidy had given Claire the night they brought her here. “ Room 319” We walked over to the elevators and pressed the third floor button. The doors closed and the elevator rattles a shook all the way to the third floor. When it spotted I quickly jumped  out and breathed a sigh of  relief. I hated elevators, with their close metal walls and unstable cables that could send you plummeting to your death. John lead the way down the dim corridor towards Claire’s room. 313,315,317…319. We walked in and seen Claire standing in a hospital gown and looking out the huge glass window into the parking lot below. “Hey,” She said without turning around.  “ Hey. How are you feeling,” John asked “Okay. Except I don’t remember what happened.” She turned around and I was surprised she look perfectly healthy. Her skin was glowy and  her hair had a sheen to it that a sick person normally wouldn’t’ve had.  She smiled, “Michael.” She ran over and hugged him. Shocked but happy Michael embraced her in a tight hug. John and I stood there and waited. She broke away from Michael and turned to John. “ How have you been?” She asked and hugged him as well. I stood there and waited for my greeting sine we had been close before. I was shocked when she turned to me and said, “ Who are you?”

So it seemed that the last thing Claire remembered was everything that happened the day before I first met her. The doctor said it was unusual but there was nothing they could do so they discharged her. In the car we tried to prompt her memory but to my avail. Michael seemed to enjoy having Claire back on his arm again. “ I was so worried about you,” Michael told her and Claire giggled. I sat in the front since Michael wanted to sit with Claire. We got back to the hotel and John said, “ Okay we’ll hit the road in the morning, but until then we’ll have to rent an extra room for Michael and Joey.” “ But we always share one room.” Claire said slowly. “ Ya, but we have four people so we need two rooms.” John replied. “Oh.” She said.

When John came back and handed us the other door pass, Michael and I walked up to the next floor and to our room. It was exactly the same as the other room except reversed since it was on a different side of the hallway. I claimed the bed next to the window and Michael took up a spot in a chair by the coffee pot. I laid there on my stomach and flipped through channels before settling on Hell’s Kitchen. I closed my eyes and remembered how the last time I watched this show my life changed.

I must have dozed off because the next thing I knew Michael was waking me up and said something about getting my shoes off the bed so I didn’t ruin the sheets and have to pay for it. In the dark I blindly sat up kicked my shoes off and crawled under the covers.

I woke up to a loud crash at about 4:30.  I stood up, shuffled across the room, and groped for the light switch. My fingers finally connected with it and the room was instantly floored with bright yellow light. I almost screamed at what I saw. A buff man about 6’5” dressed in a white shirt and jeans had Michael slung easily over his shoulder and had turned to me. What bothered me most was no broken window and forced entry though the door. However it appears Michael had still been awake and had knocked the coffee pot over to alert me or possibly in a struggle against the man. I suddenly remember it was the same man from earlier on the track. In an instant he was beside me and I attempted to run out the door.I had undone the latch when the man put his free hand on the back of my head and said, “nighty, night kid.” And everything fizzled out….

***Hours Earlier***

~Unknown P.O.V.~

He slammed his fist down on the table and said, “ This is outrageous. They almost killed each other, and you just barley stopped them.”  I rounded on him, “ I was following strict orders. Maybe you should try it sometime.”

“And what did he  have to say about this?”

 “Nothing really useful.”

The large white double doors swung open and another man walked in. He was taller than the other two with chocolate brown hair. He walked up to the table and looked the other man, “ Out.” He barked. The man scowled at him, but disappeared. He then turned to me. His icy blue eyes met mine and he said only one command before disappearing, “ Brother. It’s time.”

I knew what he wanted, and I disappeared to fetch them.
